Artist Spotlight: Deirdre Newell

For as long as I can remember, I’ve been obsessed with art. Creating it, looking at it, talking about it, learning about it, anything art related I’ve loved. Growing up in middle school in high school I always took art classes, and I almost went to art school. I realized quickly that I hated being told what to create and having limits placed on my art, so business school it was!

Anyways, I’m starting a new artist spotlight segment on my blog starting with one of my very best friend’s, Deirdre Newell. I’ve known Deirdre since my freshman year of college and she’s always been an inspiration for my art. We’ve always bonded over a love of arts and crafts and I’m so excited that I get to share her art with my followers (even if my followers basically all follow Deirdre too).

This is Deirdre rocking a tank top that she created with hand-embroidered flower embellishments! It’s one of Deirdre’s favorite pieces that she’s created, as well as one of my favorites of hers!

Deirdre’s current medium of choice is embroidery, but she loves mixing mediums, like watercolor and embroidery. Recently, she has started a 100 days of art challenge where she is creating 100 tiny embroidered pieces with quotes from her favorite vines. Something that Deirdre and I have always bonded over was our love of Vines (RIP) and when she told me about this challenge I was AMPED! I am so excited to see what she creates in the next 100 days because the first 6 already have me hype! Go follow her on Instagram to keep up with her vines, as well as her other art!

When I asked Deirdre what her favorite pieces were, these were the four she chose, and they happen to be some of my favorites as well!! Rick and Morty is a show that me and Deirdre both find hilariously funny and I have always LOVED the joke of Rick telling his little world that the middle finger means peace among worlds, seeing it recreated in embroidery is just insane to me. The Flower is one of my favorites because of Deirdre’s use of mixed media, she used watercolors to create the ombre effect within the flowers, and then embroidered the outline. The orange and the avocado are two of my favorites just because of the detail in such a tiny area! The amount of detail that Deirdre is able to create with just a needle and some thread is so insane. I applaud anyone that can embroider because I can’t even sew a button back on.

Like what you see? Well guess what! You could own some of this awesome art! Deirdre has an Etsy shop (ArtByDeirdre) where she sells her embroidery as patches, custom greek sorority and fraternity letters, handmade earrings, and so much more! 10/10 recommend!

Thanks so much for reading, and tune in soon for another artist spotlight! I have lots of artsy friends so this will be fun!
